Tenodera sinensis

Chinese Mantis

The primary subject is a praying mantis, identified by its characteristic raptorial forelegs, triangular head, and elongated prothorax. The species is determined to be the Chinese Mantis (*Tenodera sinensis*) based on its large size, overall green morphology, and the presence of a small, dark spot on the side of the thorax between the fore and middle legs, a feature characteristic of this species.

Overview

The Chinese mantis, is a species of mantis native to temperate Asia and the nearby islands. In 1896, this species was accidentally introduced by a nursery tender at Mt. Airy, a neighborhood of Philadelphia, United States. T. sinensis often is erroneously referred to as Tenodera aridifolia sinensis because it was at first described as a subspecies of Tenodera aridifolia, but T. sinensis is now established as a full species.
